Garden Sheds Cork

Planning rules for Cork City Council and Cork County Council, what to put in a written quote, and suppliers that deliver to Cork. Independent: no supplier owns this site.

Buying a shed in Cork

Cork's southwest Atlantic exposure brings frequent rain and humidity year-round. Salt-laden air along the coast speeds up timber decay if the wood isn't pressure-treated.

A garden shed is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3), so it usually does not need planning permission from Cork City Council and Cork County Council if it meets every condition. The conditions are in the first question below, and the planning permission guide covers the cases that need a closer look. If you're unsure, ask Cork City Council or Cork County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.

Material advice for Cork: Steel is usually the safer choice on exposed or coastal sites, such as Cobh, Carrigaline and coastal West Cork. If you choose timber, specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated.

Common questions: sheds in Cork

Do I need planning permission for a shed in Cork?

Usually not. Under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3), a shed is normally exempted development if it is behind the front wall of the house, all garden structures together (existing ones included) come to no more than 25 m², at least 25 m² of private open space is left to the rear or side, it is no more than 4 m high with a tiled or slated pitched roof (3 m for any other roof), and it is used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. Cork City Council and Cork County Council both apply this national exemption. Check your title deeds or land register if you're in an estate with deed restrictions. If you're unsure, ask Cork City Council or Cork County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.

Is timber or steel better for Cork's climate?

Steel is usually the more durable choice in Cork's wet, sometimes coastal conditions. Pressure-treated timber can suit sheltered inland gardens (Mallow, Fermoy, Macroom). On exposed or coastal sites, choose steel, or at least specify pressure-treated (not dip-treated) timber.
