Garden Sheds Wexford

Buying a shed in Wexford
Wexford is one of Ireland's sunnier, drier counties. Timber sheds can do well here with proper treatment. The south and east coasts (Rosslare, Kilmore Quay) are more exposed but still less punishing than Atlantic-facing counties.
A shed in Wexford is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3) if it meets all five conditions set out in the planning question below and in our planning permission guide. If you're unsure, ask Wexford County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.
Material advice for Wexford: Wexford's drier, sunnier climate is kinder to timber than a Galway or Kerry site. Pressure-treated timber is a reasonable choice for many Wexford gardens; specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated. Steel works too, and is usually the safer choice on exposed coastal sites around Rosslare and Kilmore Quay.

Common questions: sheds in Wexford
Do I need planning permission for a shed in Wexford?
Usually not, if it meets every condition of the national exemption in the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3). The shed must be behind the front wall of the house. All garden structures together, existing ones included, must come to no more than 25 m², and at least 25 m² of private open space must be left to the rear or side. It must be no higher than 4 m with a tiled or slated pitched roof, or 3 m with any other roof. It must be used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. Check your title deeds for estate-level restrictions, and talk to the council first if your home is a protected structure. If you're unsure, ask Wexford County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.
Is Wexford a good county for timber sheds?
It can be. Wexford is one of the sunnier, drier parts of Ireland, so pressure-treated timber dries out between showers better than it would on the west coast. Specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated. How long any shed lasts depends on the treatment, the base and the upkeep.
